CHAPTER 13
THE POLICEMAN AND THE DOCTOR
As the first wave swept over the coastline in and around Nam Khem, Lieutenant Colonel Niphon Yanphaisarn sat at his desk in the Pangnga Police Station, located on the highway just down the street from the hospital. He had spent the last three days monitoring the ten-man detail he’d sent to La Flora Resort to protect the Royal Family. Sorting out all the logistics and laying out their duties had taken up a fair amount of his time, so this morning he sat at his desk to catch up on paperwork. Everything had been routine from the time he had walked into the station, but around fifteen minutes past ten o’clock, he heard a fellow lieutenant currently overseeing the detail at La Flora come over the radio.
“We have a giant wave approaching the shore. I need every policeman in the area to move people away from the beach.”
Yanphaisarn peered at the radio in the corner of his office. The majority of men who worked at the station had a great sense of humor, and he thought the lieutenant was trying to play some kind of practical joke. Under normal circumstances, he would have thought it quite funny, but not with the Royal Family vacationing in the area. If things didn’t run like clockwork, all their asses would be on the line. He glared at the radio for another minute, and when the lieutenant said nothing more, he got back to his paperwork.
Five minutes later, Yanphaisarn jumped in his seat as the lieutenant’s voice came over the radio again. This time he was shouting.
“No, it’s too late! It’s too late!”
The radio went silent. Yanphaisarn walked over and stood above it, waiting for something more. He hadn’t the slightest clue what was going on, but it sounded serious. A few minutes later, the lieutenant came over the radio for the last time. His voice was hardly recognizable.
“Send help here! Send help here!”
Yanphaisarn assumed there had been an attack on the Royal Family. He ran out into the main room, where fifteen of his subordinates had been listening to the same transmission. He pointed to six of them and told them to follow him.
They took two trucks, and as they headed south along the highway, Yanphaisarn noticed nothing out of the ordinary. The sky was blue, no wind. It wasn’t until they passed the narrow, windy road leading down to the beach and Nam Khem that he saw the first sign that something was wrong. Dozens of cars and trucks, all packed with people, squealed off the road and onto the highway. Some headed north, while others headed south. All of them were in a hurry. It made Yanphaisarn wonder what the hell was going on. Because this portion of highway sat approximately twenty-five feet above sea level and because it was bordered on both sides by jungle, Yanphaisarn couldn’t see the massive waves striking the shore or the destruction that they caused. He didn’t see any sign
